GROUP F LAB DATA WEEK 4: WOOL

Group F worked with Group C to dye with woad seeds. While this was nominally supposed to turn out a blue gray, it ended up as a pale green.

The wool was treated with aluminum sulfate as a mordant. The dye ratio was 1:2, since woad is a stronger dye than some. The skein we died weighed 100.2 grams, and we added 50.1 grams of woad seeds as a dye. The water started out clear, went through yellow, and ended up green.

At the beginning of the process, before any dye or yarn was added to the pot, the water had a total hardness of 500 ppm, total chlorine 0, free chlorine 0, 7.2 pH, total alkalinity 180 ppm, and 0 cyanuric acid.

In the last third of the lab, while we spun, I managed to get 9.1 grams of spun yarn, and Daniel got 3.9 grams. Bella’s yarn was unavailable for weighing. Sam was absent.
