As many have already said, this lab was almost impossible to keep data for. I had the unique opportunity of being the first group to start digging the mortuary house foundation. This was measured multiple times to try and maintain accuracy, and markers were set up to indicate the area. I can confirm that our initial measurement of the area was 4′ x 5’6″. By the end of the day, however, I heard that our final measurement was more like 4’1″ x 4’6″. While I can believe that the width may have gotten larger, I think that there may be a measuring error on the length, and I will be remeasuring this week when we return to the site.
Other than these measurements, there was little else empirical or quantitative data to keep track of in this lab. We didn’t have anything to weigh or keep count of, so this data report is a bit more about efficiency and team building. Our group was able to complete all of our granted tasks, and we found that everything required a level of teamwork or collaboration. While everyone worked together on everything, not everyone did every task, nor did every task require multiple people. For example, two people could work on the shave horses at once, while two others hand-carved, and everyone else just stepped in when the hand-carvers got tired or needed a break. There’s a really strong sense of community building in this lab.
From a technical standpoint, I would be interested to see if we have some way of measuring the moisture content of the wood that we were working with.
