With every lab, but with this lab specifically, I noticed my discomfort when I didn’t know what to do next, or didn’t know the directions for how to do the threading of the cards and warping for example. I suppose it might not have felt the same for ancient humans, because there was no “right” way to weave that already existed, and they were discovering the many ways to do so. However, its still humbling imagining starting from nothing, having limited access to modern weaving tools, and experimenting until weaving methods were discovered, because something came out right, or beautiful. I was so scared of doing something wrong, so I was slow with my carding and weaving process, and I felt like I needed to double check constantly that the process I was following was right. So the prospect of starting from nothing is humbling, but also very freeing in a sense. being able to do or try anything, expecting no particular result or outcome, so therefore wielding no fear of mistakes, since they don’t exist, and no judgement (maybe just some comparisons among one another who is trying the weaving, but likely from a place of admiration or worry of one’s own discovery than a judgement of another’s). The lab was really neat overall! The more we try, the more I wanna continue to try on my own! Weaving like many other crafts is slow, it requires patience, and I found it quite calming. I also found it really satisfying, specifically the tapestry loom, when you would weave through every other string, then tighten them all at the end using the tool to compress the weaves together. I like the ability to switch color yarn at different points to create different patterns! The only one I wasn’t able to try was the warp-weighted loom weaving, which to me seemed most physically involved with your entire body, simply because of the size of what you are weaving, and of what you’re weaving on. It almost seemed like the three different types were three different sizes of similar types of weaving, only with slight differences. Two involving wood, one with warp weights, one without, and the last one (the smallest size) with the carding. Overall an amazing lab! The time flew by !!
