Group A Lab Data: Black Smithing

Item for ForgingTime (minutes)Number of FiresTemperature (°F)
Nail A52.1229860
Nail B~46 20988
Rove A~204862
Rove B~253902

One person each forged their own nail, with the remainder of the group feeding the fire and working the bellows. The same person made both roves, with the assistance of the student who worked on Nail A. The assisting student hammered the punch through the rove, while the main metal worked warmed the iron, flattened the piece, and held it steady.

The temperate data was taken with a temperature gun aimed at the glowing red metal right after it had been taken out of the forge and placed on the anvil. The temperature readings are to be taken as approximations, as the readings tended to jump around. The final temperature of the dying fire itself was 994°F.

Unfortunately, the data recording notebook suffered some fire damage. Some fire fleas had drifted onto the group and burned holes in the pages, so the time data with the tildes are approximations.
